Rumination Monitoring- Practical Application
A sudden reduction in rumination activity may indicate that the cow has lost her appetite,
has eaten too much concentrate per kilogram effective fiber, is in heat or is ill.
Continued loss of appetite can be an indicator of sub-clinical ketosis or acidosis.
Treatment Effectiveness Assessment
The graph above depicts a mastitis infected cow.
The first drop in rumination indicated a problem which was diagnosed as mastitis.
Treatment was administered, yet rumination levels did not return to normal and an additional treatment was administered.
This time recovery is immediate and rapid and the cow returns to pre-infection rumination levels.
Post-Partum Health Monitoring
Following calving the cow displays slow recuperation to normal rumination levels.
Five days following calving a dramatic drop in rumination level is evident- the cow is diagnosed with ketosis.
Sick cows can be identified earlier and given supportive therapy during the transition from parturition to lactation
